On August 15th, the Taliban took control over Afghanistan but this wouldn’t be the first time that this has happened. The militant group first took over in the late 1990s for 20 years which devastated Afghanistans economy and the operation of society.
During their reign, the Taliban has completely demolished women’s rights in Afghanistan. Many believe the old Islamic law, that the people have tried to hard to modernize, will be brought back again.
In the 90s, they banned women from attending school and working outside of their homes. The women also had to wear all-encompassing burqa and be escorted by a male family member whenever they were to step outside.
Although the Taliban promised that would not be the case again, the Afghanistan people are still skeptical.
Monday (August 16th), the President of the United States, Joe Biden, returned to the White House to speak about the situation in Afghanistan.
Biden said “ Afghanistan’s fall to the Taliban happened faster than anticipated….I do no regret my decision.”
He informed the media that he has decided to withdraw the American troops out of Afghanistan.
“Our current military mission will be short in time….and once we have completed this mission, we will conclude our military withdrawal.” President Biden said.
After this public speech, many American citizens were upset about it. Some say it’s been years since America has deployed their troops and that staying in Afghanistan will not make any more difference.
Celebrities such as Angelina Jolie commented on the situation.
“It is sickening to watch Afghans being displaced yet again out of the fear and uncertainty that has gripped their country.”
She also stated that she was sent a letter from a little girl in Afghanistan.
Even though the American troops are being withdrawn, Americans are still doing everything they can to help fight for Afghanistan.
